The museum was opened in 1981 as Mikuni Museum , an archive of the former town of Mikuni, modeled after the exterior of Ryusho Elementary School in the Meiji period(1868-1912).
School in the Meiji period(1868-1912).Some 40 years later, it was reopened as the Sakai City Museum in 2023.


The museum is a unique five-story octagonal Western-style building on a hill overlooking the Sea of Japan. It features the history of Sakai City, and attract visitors.
